On 14 March the new temporary exhibition of the Museum of History in Bern was opened. Until 17 November 2013 the Museum will be presenting ‘Qin – The eternal emperor and his terracotta warriors’. The exhibition focuses on the First Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi and his monumental tomb with its famous terracotta army, discovered by peasants in 1974 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. iart has contributed the media productions and installations to the exhibition.

Approximately 220 fascinating original exhibits from museums and archaeological institutes in China revive the world of the First Emperor. Embedded into the exhibition design of Holzer Kobler Architekturen and the multimedia installations of iart, the exhibits take the visitors on an eventful trip starting before the time of Qin, witnessing the rise of the First Emperor his world and his death, and ending in the present.

The exhibition is accentuated by projections and spacial sound, mainly serving the narration and staging of the objects: With an animated shadow theater the discovery of the terracotta army in 1974 comes alive, animated maps are showing the geographic extension of the Qin Empire, and, seen from the highest point of the exhibition ramp, a gigantic silhouette of the First Emperor gains in radiance by means of slightly moving light accents. On the way down the ramp, the story of the emperor’s death is shown with seven back-lit silhouette images.

Additionally, animations and films are used to complement the exhibits and putting them into context: A peasant reports retrospectively about his discovery of the terracotta remains in 1974, and animations are making the mechanism of weapons comprehensible or helping to turn seemingly simple patterns of objects into obvious images with a clear message.

From 15 November 2012 to 11 February 2013, the Orientalist Museum presented the temporary exhibition ‘The Art of Travel: Bartholomäus Schachman (1559-1614)’ in Al-Riwaq Hall, Doha, Qatar. iart contributed the ‘time machine’ of the exhibition: a circular video installation for immersion into major events of the sixteenth century.

The main exhibit was an album dated 1590 and commissioned by Bartholomäus Schachman, mayor of Gdańsk in 1604. It contains a large number of full-page watercolour drawings, documenting what he saw during his travels through the Ottoman Empire in 1588-89, depicting the costumes and people of Istanbul, together with scenes of everyday life, festivals and ceremonies. These watercolour drawings were on display along with related artworks, books and other historical objects.

In order to give the visitor a fascinating and profound view back in time to the sixteenth century, iart was commissioned with the concept, planning and realisation of a media installation taking the visitor on a time travel through main events, artworks and architecture of the century. The result was a “time machine” with ten windows to space, realised with ten screens incorporated in a spatial structure with corresponding objects. During the virtual flight, stars and dust but also events of images and texts were coming towards the viewer, thus giving a deeper insight in one decade after the other.

The new urban quarter ‘Europaallee’, located next to the Zurich main station, includes the college of education, several office buildings and a shopping mall. Commissioned by the SBB, iart contributed the light and sound concept as well as the planning and realisation of the media installations in the shopping mall.

The media show is combined by four elements: downlights, a LED ceiling, projections and spatial sound. Numerous downlights embedded in the glass granulate coated ceiling provide a pleasant overall illumination. Additional changing light moods and light patterns are created by LED lights mounted above and behind the ceiling and frieze. This is combined with 16 projections to add an outdoor atmosphere to the mall; images of nature are giving glimpses of the desert, alps, sea, rainforest and meadow.
Spatial sounds acoustically complement the visual appearance of nature: water, wind, crickets, rustling leaves, animal calls and other sounds are synchronised with the projections.

The technology of the media performance is very flexible. The LED illumination works well also without the projections, and further content could easily be added to the projected parts. The installation can be controlled from a central plant room as well as via the internet.

tegoro is specialised in the development, implementation, service and maintenance of media installations. By merging the two companies tegoro solutions ag and iart interactive ag we can combine our energy and broaden the spectrum of our services for our clients. As of January 1, 2013 the merged company will be continued as iart ag.

We are convinced of the advantages that result from the new structure. All existing contracts with all rights and duties will be transferred to iart ag on the day of the merger (presumably January 1, 2013). All tegoro employees will be taken on by iart ag.
The general manager of tegoro solutions ag, Christian Rohner, will gradually withdraw from operations and hand over all his tasks. It is not a permanent goodbye as he will join the advisory board of the merged company iart ag and will regularly follow projects and course of business from there.
