‘Schaulager Satellite’ on the Messeplatz during Art Basel
From Monday, 4th of June, the Schaulager presents itself with a white pavilion designed by Herzog & de Meuron at the Messeplatz in Basel. The Schaulager in Münchenstein is closed for restoration this summer. With its 36 meters long “satellite” though, it will be present in the middle of the events during the Art Basel. iart was responsible for planning and implementing the media and lighting of the pavilion.
Screens on the outside of the pavilion are giving first indications on what it is presenting: The Schaulager is a space for preserving, researching, sharing and passing on, not only a space for exhibitions. In the interior of the “satellite”, the topic is presented from different points of view. Videos show how the collection is maintained, how research is being done on original art works and how exhibitions are being prepared in the Schaulager. Also, the artists Philipp Gasser, Zilla Leutenegger and Thomas Ruff are showing works in which the Schaulager is documented. Due to the different contributions, we get a greater insight into the Schaulager, and we get the opportunity to see those spaces that are normally not accessible to visitors.
